I am not now nor have I ever been an Obama supporter.  The President does however, get my appreciation and thanks for taking bin laden.  The man was a murderous criminal who wished murder as many Americans as he possibly could without putting himself in danger. Well done Mr. President for pursuing assiduously and bringing to justice a mass murderer.

He acknowledges that "the majority of Muslims in Europe and America are not terrorists or violent people." But he says "it really doesn't matter that much, because if you don't define your own culture as the best, dominant one, and you allow through immigration people from those countries to come in, at the end of the day you will lose your own identity and your own culture, and your society will change. And our freedom will change -- all the freedoms we have will change."

Oh and Mr. JamesTaranto the author of the article is being a little too pc. Jim you wrote a fine article, as usual, except you missed the whole point by throwing the Islamist view a bone.

Powerline: Muslims "worry about image"

Powerline points out an Associated Press article saying Muslims are worrying about their image after the Mumbai attacks. The Powerline article is very good but I have a slightly different view.

I believe the image of Islam is just fine having been polished up by the typical murderous mayhem of its adherents. After many years of this barbarous behavior with no outcry from "moderate" Muslims one is led to the conclusion that "moderate" Muslims are cowards or non-existent.
Mark Steyn in his book America Alone asks a qquestion that goes something like this: If an Islamic terrorist, a moderate muslim , Santa Claus, and the Easter Bunny all arrive at an intersection where a hundred dollar bill is lying in the street who will get the hundred dollars? ----- the terrorist because the others are all mythical creatures.

Who’s Sleeping More Deeply — Europe or America?

My book came out in the midst of the Danish cartoon crisis. And during that crisis I saw things in Europe that — quite frankly — surprised and impressed me. I saw the editors of a Danish newspaper, Jyllands-Posten, stand up for freedom of expression in the face of worldwide rioting, vandalism, and murder by Muslims and contempt on the part of foolish Westerners. I saw a Danish prime minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, in defiance of the UN, the EU, and most of the “international community,” stand by that newspaper and refuse to meet with Muslim ambassadors who were out to intimidate his country and to force Sharia-like restrictions on Western liberties. I saw the people of Denmark, in overwhelming numbers, stand behind their prime minister in his refusal to yield to jihad. And I saw major newspapers across Europe reprinting the Jyllands-Posten cartoons in acts of free-speech solidarity.

I don’t mean to paint too rosy a picture. The Danish response wasn’t perfect. Not a single newspaper in Britain reprinted the cartoons. And both the Swedish and Norwegian governments provided textbook cases of cowering dhimmitude. But none of that was really a surprise. What did surprise, and disappoint, me was the American political and media establishment. Both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush condemned the Jyllands-Posten cartoons out of hand. The State Department denounced them too, and only reversed itself after getting an earful from the Danish government, one of its few allies in Iraq. In the entire United States of America, exactly one major newspaper, the Philadelphia Inquirer, reprinted the cartoons. And while the major broadcast networks, as well as CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC, reported extensively on the cartoon riots, none of them ever showed the cartoons at all.

I am not forgetting. I hear that most muslims are peaceful and that only a handful of homicidal maniacs have highjacked the religion. Well those murderous turds are the only ones I care about. The so called moderates have allowed their religion to be stolen and sit silently in the corner. They deserve no consideration. But the terrorists must be taken seriously and dealt with ruthlessly. Never forgive never forget.

I propose that from now on whenever we break up one of the many, many, Muslim terrorist plots we just lob a 500 lb bomb into some large city in Saudi Arabia. Maybe that would make the point that we are getting annoyed. Also the next time some multi-culti tells you the terrorism threat is exaggerated just pop him in the nose. Then tell them your religious beliefs require you do that when someone spews bullshit and point out that the discomfort they feel is exaggerated.

WELL-KEPT SECRET

His conversion to Christianity was a well-kept secret, disclosed by the Vatican in a statement less than an hour before the Easter eve service started.

Think, for a minute, about the implications of that last sentence: "His conversion to Christianity was a well-kept secret...." How can anybody possibly argue that Islam is not attacking the most fundamental freedoms of the West and winning when the Pope must keep the conversion of a Roman secret for fear of violence against the worshiper and the Church?

In a sense, the assassination of Benazir Bhutto is a political and cultural version of an honor killing. Bhutto was the first woman Prime Minister of a Muslim nation and she symbolized an unacceptably Western form of female ambition and achievement. She had attended Harvard/Radcliffe and Oxford. She spoke English—perhaps more fluently than she spoke her native Sindi or Urdu. She once dressed as Western women do. Indeed, many Muslim women from wealthy families, including educators and feminists, have done so for a long time. They cannot do so now.

Bhutto was one of the “moderate” Muslims for whom the West yearns. Muslim fanatics murdered her in cold blood and they did so in an exquisitely planned and choreographed way. Their willingness to die in order to kill, terrorize, and impose their ideology upon others is precisely what keeps other “moderate” Muslims silent.

How far are the representatives of freedom, modernity, and human rights willing to go to end such terrorism? If we are not ready to do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to free humanity from the plague of fundamentalist Islam, then we must be prepared to convert, veil, submit—or die.

Dr. Chesler's last sentence, quoted above, is the central issue of our time. People willing to die in order to kill are not open to polite negotiation or reasoned discussion. They have abandoned reason for blind faith in a cult of death and nihilism. We must oppose them such ferocious resolve that the hopelessness of their cause forces them to rethink ( or more acccurately think for the first time) their position. Trying to appease Islamic radicals is just whistling past the graveyard.
One more thing. Why aren't the women's groups and feminist leaders out front in the fight against this movement that is antithetical to everything about equality for women?

Update: Ellen R. Sheely was kind enough to comment on this post and I looked her up. Turns out Ms. Sheeley is an expert on honor killings and the author of Reclaiming Honor in Jordan: A National Public Opinion Survey on "Honor" Killings

I have not read this book but a quick read of the editorial review and reader reviews at Amazon has me interested to read it. The story of the author is remarkable as well. From Amazon:

Those Lovable Saudis

Those fun loving Saudi Islamists continue to live down to expectations. From John Mauldin's weekly letter:

I usually avoid controversial matters, other than economics and finance, but I came across a story which I think deserves attention. It seems that a 19 year old young lady in Saudi Arabia was gang-raped by six armed men. They got between one and five years in prison. Because she was in a car with a man who was not related to her, she was given a sentence of 90 lashes. Because she appealed and a higher court ordered another trial, the court then more than doubled the sentence to 200 lashes.

"A court source told the English-language Arab News that the judges had decided to punish the woman further for 'her attempt to aggravate and influence the judiciary through the media.'" Her lawyer had his credentials removed for defending her. This is simply barbaric. It is an affront to any civilized thoughtful person. Where are the protests? Are we to believe that the Saudi royalty condones such acts?

More on Laura Bush Wearing Abbaya

I commented on this here but found much better commentary thanks to
Little Green Footballs who points out this column by Caroline Glick.

Sunday morning, Mrs. Bush sought to answer her critics in an interview with Fox News. Unfortunately, her remarks compounded the damage. Mrs. Bush said, “These women do not see covering as some sort of subjugation of women, this group of women that I was with. That’s their culture. That’s their tradition. That’s a religious choice of theirs.”

It is true that this is their culture. And it is also their tradition. But it is not their choice. Their culture and tradition are predicated on denying them the choice of whether or not to wear a garment that denies them their identity just as it denies them the right to make any choices about their lives.

I am repeatedly astonished by the failure of the women's rights organizations to stand up and demand equal rights for women in Islam.

Saudi Arabia's religious police stopped schoolgirls from leaving a blazing building because they were not wearing correct Islamic dress, according to Saudi newspapers.

One witness said he saw three policemen "beating young girls to prevent them from leaving the school because they were not wearing the abaya".

Most of the victims were crushed in a stampede as they tried to flee the blaze.

The school was locked at the time of the fire - a usual practice to ensure full segregation of the sexes.

Perhaps Mrs. Bush has further comment about how much choice these young women have of wearing the abbaya.

Multiculturism Trumps Women's Rights

Dr. Sanity reprises a post that I missed the first time. She links to this article by Johann Hari in the Independent. Both discuss the creeping loss of personal freedom created by attempting to tolerate the intolerable.

Do you believe in the rights of women, or do you believe in multiculturalism? A series of verdicts in the German courts in the past month, have shown with hot, hard logic that you can't back both. You have to choose.

The highest administrative court in North Rhine-Westphalia has agreed that Muslim parents have the "right" to forbid their daughter from going on a school trip unless she was accompanied by a male family member at all times. The judges said the girl was like "a partially mentally impaired person who, because of her disability, can only travel with a companion".As the Iranian author Azar Nafisi puts it: "I very much resent it when people - maybe with good intentions or from a progressive point of view - keep telling me, 'It's their culture' ... It's like saying the culture of Massachusetts is burning witches." She is horrified by the moves in Canada to introduce shariah courts to enforce family law for Muslims.

From the perspective of the socialist utopian, what matters more than Women's rights or Gay Righs are the rights of a designated culture. The dogma of multiculturalism trumps the dogma of women's superiority. This is probably because for the socialist utopian, might makes right and the needs of the many always outweigh the needs of the few--and the few better remember that fact, or else.

This article appeared almost a year ago but still resonates.

Europe is turning Muslim. As Broder is sixty years old he is not going to emigrate himself. “I am too old,” he said. However, he urged young people to get out and “move to Australia or New Zealand. That is the only option they have if they want to avoid the plagues that will turn the old continent uninhabitable.”

Broder is convinced that the Europeans are not willing to oppose islamization. “The dominant ethos,” he told De Volkskrant, “is perfectly voiced by the stupid blonde woman author with whom I recently debated. She said that it is sometimes better to let yourself be raped than to risk serious injuries while resisting. She said it is sometimes better to avoid fighting than run the risk of death.”

In a recent op-ed piece in the Brussels newspaper De Standaard (23 October) the Dutch (gay and self-declared “humanist”) author Oscar Van den Boogaard refers to Broder’s interview. Van den Boogaard says that to him coping with the islamization of Europe is like “a process of mourning.” He is overwhelmed by a “feeling of sadness.” “I am not a warrior,” he says, “but who is? I have never learned to fight for my freedom. I was only good at enjoying it.”

Germany Foils `Massive' Bomb Attack, Prosecutor Says (Update2)

Sept. 5 (Bloomberg) -- German police arrested three people suspected of planning ``massive'' terrorist attacks on U.S. and other targets in the country, preventing the deaths of ``many, many people,'' the Chief Federal Prosecutor Monika Harms said.

The suspects, two Germans and a Turkish national, were arrested yesterday at a house in Oberschledorn, a village in the western state of North-Rhine Westphalia, officials said. Bomb- making materials and military detonators were also seized. The trio are alleged members of a local cell of the Islamist terrorist organization Jihad Union, which has links to al-Qaeda
